Tuesday brought residents of the world's most polluted city were faced with breathing severely hazardous air that registered in the "severe" category.
Various sections of the capital recorded an AQI over 500, which represents 10x the safe threshold established by the WHO.
In some locations, readings of PM2.5 and PM10 soared to of eighteen hundred, amounting to 15-20x above acceptable limits.
Beginning in 2020, officials had enforced a complete ban on the purchase and ignition of firecrackers during celebrations due to their substantial impact to the deadly smog that engulfs the city as winter sets in.
However earlier this year, the current regional leadership petitioned the judicial authority to request a relaxation of the ban.
Officials advocated for allowing "green crackers" – historically criticized by environmental experts as being only roughly 30 percent reduced emissions – as a compromise between "tradition and public health".
Despite concerns of medical and ecological advocates, judges approved the request, stipulating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be ignited during designated hours throughout the festival.
On Monday night, there was extensive violation of the time restrictions across the capital, with little regulation regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the more environmentally friendly version.
Several monitoring devices throughout Delhi registered air quality peaking around midnight to the most severe readings recorded during Diwali in at least the past three years.
The proliferation of firecrackers during the festival also initiated a blame game with neighbouring Pakistan, with officials in Pakistani Punjab province pointing to declining pollution levels in the city of Lahore on contaminants traveling from India following the festivities.
Extremely elevated concentrations of atmospheric toxins in Delhi have remained as a significant issue for fifteen-plus years, with the situation continuing to worsen.
During celebratory seasons, the levels of toxic particles in the environment has been documented to shoot up to 70% higher the most severe readings ever documented in China's capital, which was previously considered as the world's most polluted city.
The problem in Delhi is attributed to a mix of multiple factors including automobile exhaust, construction debris, construction activities, rubbish burning and haze from crop residue ignition in adjacent states of farming communities.
Throughout these areas, farmers illegally ignite agricultural waste to expedite field preparation, producing hazardous pollution that remains stagnant over the metropolitan area as colder air arrives.
Both financial and medical impact on the roughly thirty-three million inhabitants living in the Delhi area is enormous, according to numerous investigations.
These hazardous conditions leads to increased incidence of nervous system, cardiovascular and lung conditions, and can potentially cause malignancies.
The pollution is projected to be accounting for 10,000 premature fatalities annually in the city.
