The NFL has levied a substantial $250,000 fine on Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for what he describes as an “unintentional” obscene gesture directed at attendees during a recent contest at the Jets’ stadium.
Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones flashing his middle finger toward opposing supporters, though he insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans present at the game as his team clinched a decisive win.
“That was unfortunate. It was kind of an interaction with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “There was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was filled with excitement for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the signal was entirely unintentional, happening amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I just put up the incorrect digit,” he noted. “The action was accidentally done. I’m not kidding. Should you call it accidental, you can. But it got resolved rapidly.”
This is not the first time an league proprietor has been penalized for misconduct. Recent cases include:
Jones, a figure who is known for his media savvy, reportedly has an estimated net worth of around $16bn, so the penalty easily payable for the billionaire proprietor.
This event comes after a controversial preseason for Jones, who encountered widespread backlash from the Cowboys fanbase after the team dealt star defensive player Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.
Additionally, Jones was a prominent subject in a streaming series that explored his influence in building the Cowboys into the world’s highest-worth sports franchise, despite its recent title shortcomings.
The NFL’s decision to fine Jones highlights its continuing effort to uphold proper behavior among all franchise representatives, irrespective of their position or financial standing.
